What platforms does Deadline Editor support?
Deadline Editor is available on macOS, iPad, and iOS. All platforms share the same core feature set, with curves adjustment available on macOS only. One subscription covers all platforms.
Do I need DeadlineFTP to use Deadline Editor?
No. Deadline Editor is a fully standalone app. You can import photos from card readers, folders, or FTP servers without any cloud service. If you also use DeadlineFTP, you can sync photos from the cloud directly into your contact sheets.
Does Deadline Editor require an internet connection?
No. All processing, audio transcription, and metadata editing happens locally on your device. No data is sent to any server. An internet connection is only needed for FTP/SFTP export, DeadlineFTP sync, and sports roster generation.
What photo formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, and RAW formats from Canon (CR2/CR3), Nikon (NEF), Sony (ARW), and other professional cameras. Also supports MOV, WebP, GIF, and BMP. Color management includes ICC profile detection with Display P3 wide color support.
How does audio memo transcription work?
Deadline Editor transcribes camera audio memos (.m4a and .wav) into text captions on-device. Smart transcription automatically parses spoken jersey numbers and team names, looks them up in your Quick Text sources, and converts them into full player descriptions.
What is Quick Text?
Quick Text lets you type a short code and expand it to a full description. For sports, the built-in roster generator creates Quick Text files for NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and college sports with player codes, jersey numbers, and team prefixes. It supports delimiter mode and phrase autocomplete from CSV/TSV source files.
What is FTP Tether?
FTP Tether connects your camera directly to the Deadline Editor app on macOS, iPad, or iPhone via FTP. As you shoot, photos appear instantly on your device — no cloud or internet connection required. Your camera sends images over WiFi or Ethernet directly to the app, so you can see and edit them in real time as they're captured. This is ideal for studio work, sideline editing, or any situation where you want an immediate on-device preview.
Can Deadline Editor sync photos from DeadlineFTP Cloud?
Yes. Deadline Editor has a built-in DeadlineFTP cloud sync feature that pulls photos directly from your DeadlineFTP cloud gallery into your contact sheets. This is separate from FTP Tether — cloud sync works over the internet and lets you receive photos that were uploaded to DeadlineFTP from anywhere. Deadline Editor also supports importing from traditional FTP servers, so you can pull photos from any FTP or SFTP source directly into your workspace.
Can I export to FTP/SFTP servers?
Yes. Configure multiple FTP or SFTP destinations and export finished photos with retry on failure. You can also upload directly to PhotoShelter galleries. Export supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC with quality controls, resize options, file size limiting, and pattern-based renaming.
What is export validation?
You can define per-field validation rules on XMP templates with three severity levels: Required (blocks delivery), Alert (requires per-image acknowledgment), and Warning (dismissible notice). Images that pass validation deliver immediately; images with issues are held in a pending queue where you can fix and re-validate them.
How does the photographer registry work?
Deadline Editor can automatically detect photographers from camera serial numbers, folder names, parent folders, or XMP field values. Each photographer has default metadata fields (creator, title, city, copyright, etc.) that are applied automatically when their images are detected.
Can I sync settings with my team?
Yes. With a DeadlineFTP account, you can automatically push settings to your team including XMP templates, pinned fields, Quick Text files, photographer profiles, delivery presets, and FTP servers. You can also sync across your own devices via iCloud or export settings as a portable JSON file.
What is editorial-only toning?
Editorial-only toning mode restricts adjustments to editorial-safe controls, disabling masking and cloning to enforce integrity standards. This ensures that images processed through Deadline Editor meet the ethical requirements of news organizations and wire services.
Does Deadline Editor support keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. There are over 100 keyboard shortcuts across gallery, editor, metadata, filtering, batch mode, slideshow, delivery, and navigation. All shortcuts are customizable and context-aware, adapting based on whether you're in the gallery, editor, batch mode, or slideshow.
Can I use Deadline Editor with an external editor like Photoshop?
Yes. You can open images directly in Photoshop or any external editor with configurable RAW/JPEG handling. Deadline Editor tracks file changes and preserves metadata throughout the roundtrip.
